The Career of a College Improviser
by Brady O’Callahan
I’ve spent the last three years of my life pouring my entire self into my college improv group. 8th Floor Improv was still fairly young when I auditioned in the fall of 2007. Since then, we’ve grown exponentially, to a point where I am enamored with what we’ve accomplished, all because a group of friends with a similar...

The Lantern: Updating Highlights Magazine for Next...
by Mark Hale Jr.
Dear Highlights magazine,
I’ve been a fan of your fine publication for quite some time. So much so that I’ve continued my subscription these past 15 years. However, I’ve noticed a growing flaw in your fine magazine: Highlights has not aged at all! The important life lessons of sharing and consideration for my friends and family are the same. I looked to your...

All of us have little people in our heads who write the dreams we see at night. This is a movie pitch that took place at Dreamworx in John Hamilton.
“Good morning, gentlemen.”
“Good morning.”
“What have you got for me today?”
“Okay we’ve got a horror script. John is walking on a green beach when all of the sudden a giant lobster monster rises from the sea and eats his mother.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!...
The Lantern: Jesus Loves You, But Not That Much
by Nate Varrone
OK, you guys are making it really hard to be perfect right now. I think there a few people out there that don’t quite get my purpose or why I’m here on this Earth. I mean, I am really close to losing it right now.
Breathe, Jesus. Breathe. You’re the “Prince of Peace,” remember? Just be calm. Whew. Sorry.
All right, let me reiterate this one more time — I’m the son of God,...

Medieval Activists
natevarrone:
Young Peasant: Sire! Look at all of the fallen knights.
Knight: Those aren’t knights, they’re animal rights activists.
Young Peasant: Lol.
In medieval times peasants didn’t have the right to laugh, so they resorted to expressing their laughter by saying “Lol.”

The Lantern: Linguistics Takes a Down Turn
by Sebastien Pensis
Globalization has become a trademark of the 21st Century. Time and space have become virtually meaningless as news travels around the world instantly. Every nation is connected via the global Web. Many people the world over are used to instant reception of terabytes of information, making most current forms of communication obsolete.
This has wreaked havoc upon...

Library Day at Oakland Elementary
Jess has some pent-up grade school rage.
thumbtackattack:
This is ridiculous. We get it, we get it. Couldn’t this whole fire safety presentation be summed up in “stop, drop, and roll”? And whose parents haven’t taught them the whole “check the door with the back of your hand to see if it’s hot first” trick? Really? Can’t the fire marshal just wrap it up already?
And of course the school always...

I’m at the Thompson library, studying for my midterm, and there’s a man in here that is completely lost. He’s sitting at a study table, intently focused on his calculus book… decked out from head to toe in Wolverine clothing! Now, I’m not usually a big promoter of rivalry, but this is clearly my call to duty to support my university! I will not stand for such treason! Pssssst!...

The Lantern: How To Write An Alma Mater
by Matthew Starr
“Carmen Ohio” is the official alma mater of The Ohio State University. Ohio State lore states that around the turn of the century, “Carmen Ohio” was written by a freshman named Fred Cornell on the train ride home from a Michigan football game — a game that Ohio State lost 86-0.
You have to wonder what that was like. It couldn’t have been easy rallying school spirit after...
